About Washingtonville New York

Washingtonville was originally settled in 1731 and grew from a tiny settlement of nine houses to a bustling village in the early to mid 1800s with entrepreneurs Samuel Moffat and John Jacques driving growth through Moffat’s trading post and tavern and Jacques’ boot/shoemaking shop. In 1839, Jacques established what would become America’s oldest continuously operating winery now known as the Brotherhood Winery. During it’s early days Washingtonville was originally named “Matthew’s Field” until the 1800s when it was renamed Little York and then in 1818 both Moffat and Jacques changed the village’s name to it’s current moniker of “Washingtonville” after the first president of the United States, George Washington, who once resided in Newburgh, NY.

There is much to love about the small village of Washingtonville, located near the Town of Blooming Grove, which is less than eight miles from Monroe New York. For starters, Washingtonville offers one of the widest variety of family-owned businesses in all of Orange County with local favorites Brother Bruno’s pizzeria and Joe’s cafe alongside popular national brands Dunkin Donuts, Subway and CVS. As a quaint village of slightly more than 6,200 residents you will find a warm, friendly atmosphere with tree-lined sidewalks on both sides of the street where you can walk to nearly everything. The village is also very festive and social with events like the school scholarship run on West Main Street, the Memorial Day parade and annual grape festival at the Brotherhood Winery which brings together over 100 craft vendors along with live music, family-friendly activities and foods of all types.
