History of Orange County

Shortly after the formation of the first thirteen colonies Henry Hudson sailed his ship, the “Half Moon”, into the Hudson River in 1609 and docked at Cornwall on Hudson proclaiming it “a very pleasant place to build a town on”. Orange County started out as one of the first twelve counties created by the Province of New York; one of the first thirteen colonies. During the Revolutionary War the future first president of the United States, George Washington, established his headquarters in Newburgh, NY. In nearby West Point General Benedict Arnold attempted, unsuccessfully, to turn over the fort to the British Army in 1782 which became one of the most well-known acts of treason in the history of the U.S. The area is also famous for the black dirt onions of Pine Island, invention of both “Philadelphia” brand cream cheese and Velveeta Cheese, the tuxedo dinner jacket, and the oldest continuously operating winery (Brotherhood Winery) in the United States.

Orange County Climate
